What cosmetic dentistry can change
With years of experience, our Stockton dentists understand the many different varieties of cosmetic difficulty in teeth, and there is a solution for each one. Broadly, cosmetic treatment changes one of four things: the colour of your teeth, their shape and surface, their position, or the gum tissue framing them.
Knowing which of those actually bothers you is most of the diagnosis. Patients frequently arrive asking for whitening when the thing they dislike is a chipped edge or a gap, and those need entirely different treatments.

Colour: what whitening will and will not fix
Teeth grow darker over the years from the chemicals in coffee, tea, wine and many of the foods we enjoy. Over-the-counter whitening products are largely ineffective compared with in-office treatment, principally because their trays are one-size-fits-all and seldom fit, leaking chemicals onto gums where they do not belong.
Professional teeth whitening uses custom-fitted trays and stronger agents under supervision. It is a genuinely transformative treatment for someone with healthy teeth and surface staining.
It has a hard limit, though. Some types of stain cannot be removed with whitening agents at all and are better addressed with porcelain veneers or other restorations. Whitening also has no effect on existing crowns, fillings or veneers, which keep the shade they were manufactured in, so if you are planning both, whiten first and match the restorations to the result afterward.
Shape and surface: bonding, veneers and fillings
For chips, gaps and irregularities, the choice comes down to how much of the tooth needs covering and how long you need it to last.
Dental bonding applies composite resin directly to the tooth and shapes it by hand, usually in a single visit and at the lowest cost. Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory and cover the whole front surface, more expensive and staged over several appointments, but far more resistant to staining over time.
Tooth-coloured fillings sit at the boundary between cosmetic and restorative work, repairing decay with composite that blends into natural enamel rather than announcing itself in metal.
Position: orthodontics is not only cosmetic
Straight teeth that meet properly between the upper and lower jaw are easier to clean, better to chew with, and less prone to enamel damage and gum disease. Crowded and overlapping teeth create exactly the spaces a toothbrush cannot reach, which is why crowding and gum inflammation so often appear together.
Orthodontic treatment with clear aligners or braces is frequently an example of preventive dentistry, fixing problems now to eliminate larger ones later. For children, alignment problems are best identified while the jaw is still growing; see early orthodontic evaluation.
The gums frame everything
Sometimes the teeth are fine and the gum line is the problem. Excess tissue makes teeth look unnaturally short and can increase susceptibility to periodontal infection. Crown lengthening reshapes gum and bone to correct a “gummy” smile, and is also used to expose enough tooth for a restoration where one has broken beneath the gum line.
Why we consult before we treat
Don’t waste money. A professional consultation based on clinical experience determines the best course before you spend anything, and occasionally the answer is that a cleaning will remove the surface staining that prompted the enquiry in the first place.
Cosmetic treatment is also built on healthy foundations. Active decay or untreated gum disease is addressed first, because bleaching agents on inflamed tissue and veneers on unstable teeth both end badly.
Where a tooth is damaged or missing rather than simply imperfect, start with restorative dentistry, a porcelain crown or an implant does the cosmetic job and the structural one at once.
An attractive smile catches attention and can change your self-esteem for the better. To talk through the options, request an appointment or call (209) 951-3436.
