Early Orthodontic Evaluation in Stockton, CA

We offer a variety of options to help minimize alignment problems, lessen future orthodontic treatment, and aid the orthodontist in your child's future care.

Early orthodontic assessment is not about putting braces on young children. It is about noticing, while the jaw is still growing, the problems that become much harder to correct once it has stopped.

Why timing matters

Identifying crowding, crossbites and space loss early means some problems can be reduced or prevented outright, rather than corrected later with longer treatment. In other cases early work does not replace later orthodontics but makes it simpler and shorter.

Preventative orthodontic options

Some of the options we offer include:

  • Tooth guidance. Directing erupting teeth into better positions as they come through.
  • Habit appliances. Addressing thumb sucking and similar habits that shape the developing bite.
  • Expansion appliances. Widening a narrow arch to create room for the permanent teeth.
  • Space maintainers. Holding open the space left when a baby tooth is lost early, so the permanent tooth beneath it has somewhere to erupt.

That last one is the most frequently needed and the least anticipated. When a baby tooth is lost prematurely, neighboring teeth drift into the gap within months, and the permanent tooth arrives to find its place taken.

What an evaluation involves

Evaluation happens naturally as part of routine children’s visits, so in most cases no separate appointment is required.

Beyond childhood

Where full alignment treatment is appropriate, whether in the teenage years or later in life, see orthodontics and clear aligners. Straight teeth that meet properly are easier to clean, better to chew with, and less prone to enamel damage and gum disease.

Why a growing jaw is an opportunity

A growing jaw can be guided. A finished one can only be worked around.

That single fact is why timing matters so much in children’s orthodontics. Identifying crowding, crossbites and space loss early means some problems can be reduced or prevented outright rather than corrected later with longer treatment.

What we are watching for

We assess how the teeth are erupting, how the upper and lower jaws relate to each other, and whether there is adequate room for the permanent teeth still to come. X-rays are used where they are needed to see unerupted teeth, evaluated individually to limit unnecessary exposure.

What early treatment does not do

It is worth being clear about the limits. Early intervention does not guarantee that braces or aligners will be unnecessary later, and any practice suggesting otherwise is overselling it.

What it reliably does is reduce the severity of what needs correcting, prevent space loss that is difficult to recover, and make later treatment shorter. For full alignment treatment in the teenage years or adulthood, see orthodontics and clear aligners.

Questions patients ask

At what age should my child be assessed?
Assessment happens naturally as part of routine children's visits rather than at a set age, so in most cases no separate appointment is required. What matters is that crowding and bite problems are identified while the jaw is still growing and can be guided.
Does early assessment mean early braces?
No. Early orthodontic work is often about guiding development rather than moving teeth, space maintainers, expansion appliances and habit appliances. In many cases it does not replace later orthodontics but makes it simpler and shorter.
What is a space maintainer and why would my child need one?
It holds open the space left when a baby tooth is lost early, so the permanent tooth beneath it has somewhere to erupt. Without one, neighbouring teeth drift into the gap within months and the permanent tooth arrives to find its place taken.
My child sucks their thumb. Does that matter?
It can shape the developing bite if it continues past the age when the permanent teeth begin arriving. Habit appliances are one of the options we offer, and the first step is simply raising it at a routine visit so we can assess whether it is having an effect.
