Emergency Dentist in Stockton, CA
Dental pain is no joke. A painful tooth can be a sign of serious illness and can progress to dangerous problems if it is not handled immediately.
In a dental emergency, call the office first, do not wait for a callback.

Call the office first
In a dental emergency, call (209) 951-3436 rather than waiting for a reply to an online form. Time is the variable you have least control over, and in some situations, a knocked-out tooth above all. It decides the outcome.

What counts as a dental emergency
Emergency dentistry is needed when one of the following arises:
- A tooth is broken or dislodged by trauma, accident or chewing
- A debilitating toothache occurs
- A dental restoration breaks loose
Alongside those, facial swelling, fever, or swollen lymph nodes in the neck alongside tooth pain indicate an infection that has spread beyond the tooth. Do not wait on those. Call as soon as you notice them.
Why waiting makes it worse
Most dental emergencies are progressive. An exposed pulp does not stabilise; it becomes infected. An infection does not stay in the tooth; it moves into the surrounding bone and soft tissue.
There is one counterintuitive case worth knowing. A severe toothache that disappears on its own is not necessarily good news, when the nerve inside a tooth dies, the pain from that nerve stops while the infection continues. Pain that resolves after being severe still needs to be examined.
The four situations we see most
A knocked-out tooth can often be saved, but the window is measured in minutes. Handle it by the crown, keep it moist, and come in immediately.
A cracked or broken tooth may be cosmetic or urgent depending on whether the fracture has reached the nerve, and the size of the missing piece is a poor guide to which.
A lost filling or crown leaves the underlying tooth exposed and, less obviously, allows the surrounding teeth to shift. Keep the crown; it can often be re-cemented rather than remade.
Toothache and dental pain is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Severe decay reaching the root, bacterial infection leading to abscess, and oral cysts or tumours are all possible sources, and telling them apart requires an examination.
We also treat dislodged and loose teeth, which are handled much like an avulsed tooth.
What to expect when you arrive
An emergency appointment is shaped by the clock. The first task is establishing what is happening and relieving the pain; the definitive repair often comes at a second visit once the tooth has settled.
Diagnosis usually starts with a visual examination and, where that is not conclusive, X-rays. Depending on the cause, the tooth may then need root canal therapy, a crown, a filling, or replacement with an implant.
Children’s emergencies are handled differently
Trauma to a child’s mouth follows different rules, and a knocked-out baby tooth in particular is not treated the way an adult tooth is. Call the office rather than acting on general advice. The specifics are covered under knocked-out tooth and pediatric dentistry.
Most emergencies were preventable
Nearly every emergency we treat began as something that was treatable earlier, more cheaply and at a more convenient hour. Routine examinations exist precisely to find those problems before they announce themselves at midnight.
