Orthodontics & Clear Aligners in Stockton, CA

Orthodontics is about more than looking good. Straight teeth that meet properly between the upper and lower jaw are easier to keep healthy.

Straight teeth that meet properly between the upper and lower jaw provide three benefits at once:

  • Easier cleaning, which means better dental health
  • A better bite and better chewing, which leads to a healthier jaw
  • Greater confidence from an attractive smile

Misaligned teeth can lead to enamel damage, gum disease or tooth loss. For many patients, clear aligner treatment such as Invisalign is more than a cosmetic decision.

Why alignment affects health, not just appearance

Crowded and overlapping teeth create spaces a toothbrush cannot clean and floss struggles to reach. Plaque accumulates in exactly those places, which is why crowding and gum inflammation so often appear together.

A bite that does not meet correctly distributes chewing force unevenly. Over years that shows up as worn edges, chipped enamel and strain on the jaw joint, problems considerably more expensive to fix than they would have been to prevent.

Clear aligners and braces

Both move teeth by applying gentle, sustained pressure over time. The difference is how.

Clear aligners are a series of removable trays, each slightly different from the last, worn in sequence. They are taken out to eat and to clean your teeth, which makes hygiene during treatment considerably easier.

Braces are fixed to the teeth and adjusted periodically. Being fixed, they do not depend on the patient remembering to wear them, and they handle a wider range of complex movements.

Which is appropriate depends on what needs to move and how far. That assessment is the purpose of the consultation.

Living with treatment

Cleaning during treatment

This is where the two approaches differ most in daily practice. Aligners come out to eat and to brush, so hygiene is largely unchanged. Fixed braces create more places for plaque to gather, which raises the value of fluoride treatment and more frequent professional cleanings while they are on.

After the teeth have moved

Teeth do not simply stay where they are put. Retention is part of the plan rather than an afterthought, and skipping it undoes work that took months.

Orthodontics as preventive dentistry

Orthodontic care is often an example of preventative dentistry, fixing problems now to eliminate problems later. You end up with a healthy smile that genuinely fits.

Teeth in their corrected positions also make later work simpler. Fillings, crowns and veneers all perform better on teeth that are properly positioned and evenly loaded.

For children, crowding and bite problems are best identified while the jaw is still growing. See early orthodontic evaluation.

Questions patients ask

Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?
Teeth move at any age. The biological process that allows them to be repositioned does not stop in adulthood, which is why a substantial share of orthodontic patients are adults. What changes with age is that treatment may take longer and existing dental work needs factoring into the plan.
Clear aligners or braces, which is better?
Neither is better in general; they suit different situations. Aligners are removable, which makes cleaning your teeth during treatment far easier. Braces are fixed, so they do not depend on the patient wearing them, and they handle a wider range of complex movements. Which applies depends on what needs to move and how far.
Is orthodontic treatment only cosmetic?
No. Straight teeth that meet properly are easier to clean and better to chew with, and misaligned teeth can lead to enamel damage, gum disease or tooth loss. For many patients the functional case is stronger than the appearance one.
When should my child first be assessed?
Alignment is assessed as part of routine children's visits rather than at a set age, because problems are easiest to influence while the jaw is still growing. See our page on early orthodontic evaluation for what that involves.
